TRAVERSE CITY, MI — A first-of-its-kind apprenticeship program in northern Michigan will help a Traverse City manufacturing company train its employees. JanTec Incorporated, in partnership with Northwest Michigan Works!, has launched a new U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeship for welders. JanTec Incorporated is a leading manufacturer of conveyance systems and products.
Registered under the Northwest Michigan Works! U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) Standards of Apprenticeship, JanTec Incorporated is providing apprentices with approximately 36 months of on-the-job learning along with over 400 hours of related educational instruction. The related coursework is provided through Northwestern Michigan College. The curriculum complements the hands-on training while providing a robust experience to expand the career pathways for the apprentices. Upon completion of the program, apprentices will earn credentials including the U.S. Department of Labor National Journeyworker Certification.
"At JanTec, Inc., the core of our corporate DNA is defined by our commitment to improving lives, personal & professional workforce development and engaging with the communities we serve, said Troy Curran, President, JanTec, Inc. “With our new USDOL registered apprenticeship program, we continue to build on this mission. As JanTec continues to grow and expand, we look to add apprentices later this year to learn from and be mentored by the talented production team we have today. This program would not be possible without the guidance and support of the team at Northwest Michigan Works! They have made the process straightforward and effortless. They have done most of the heavy lifting to ensure we met the requirements of the USDOL and we look forward to their continued partnership as we kick-off the program.”
Registered apprenticeships are developed through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor and are a proven training method for employers to build a talent pipeline of highly skilled, educated employees. Registered apprenticeships are offered in over 1300 occupations and can be designed for any size or type of business. Northwest Michigan Works! provides technical assistance and administrative support for registered apprenticeships, including development and implementation guidance.
The Networks Northwest team did a great job to help the City of Charlevoix and Charlevoix Township collaborate in addressing housing challenges in our community. They facilitated dialogue with Planning Commissioners, community stakeholders, and municipal officials to develop a plan for cohesive zoning in areas of growth for our two governments. Further, they were able to pinpoint the challenges in each unit and propose changes that would be beneficial all around. Together, we believe we'll be better prepared for housing developments and job growth in our region. We look forward to working with them on future projects!
