My success coach helped to break down my barriers and build my confidence. I continue to regularly visit with the Business Success Coach since meeting her. I have overcome obstacles like getting my driver's license, car insurance, a vehicle, educational support, affordable housing and have been able to eliminate financial debts through learned budgeting techniques.

Thank you for hosting the MiWorks' Fall into a New Job Hiring Event. It was an excellent and well-organized event with a very positive environment. The event not only provided an opportunity to meet potential team members but also allowed me to network with other HR colleagues regarding hiring, team building, and our apprenticeship program. I met five potential candidates and made a hire later that week. Thanks to the Michigan Works! team for their hard work in making this a successful event.

Skilled Manufacturing, Inc. (SMI) is a Traverse City-based Tier 1 manufacturer serving the automotive, aerospace, medical, and defense industries. Operating across three campuses, SMI handles 100 percent of its production in-house, from writing software programs to running on-site robotics. However, finding job seekers in Northern Michigan with the exact technical skills required for high-precision manufacturing is an ongoing challenge. To stay competitive, win new contracts, and meet strict industry standards, SMI needed a proactive way to train its current workforce and build a strong local talent pipeline.
To address these needs, SMI partnered with Northwest Michigan Works! to access funding through the Michigan Going PRO Talent Fund. SMI received $32,471.00 in grant reimbursement to support specialized training for 18 incumbent workers, including one USDOL Electrical apprentice. Demonstrating a strong commitment to long-term employee growth, SMI invested an additional $1,512,612.19 of its own capital into the initiative. Employees completed rigorous coursework, earning certifications ranging from Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to Project Management and AS9100 Auditor credentials. The impact of this upskilling program was immediate and measurable. By mastering advanced technical and quality control processes in-house, SMI strengthened its ability to deliver products on time and on budget while positioning itself to better go after new business contracts. Participating employees saw significant personal career growth, with the average hourly wage rising from $28.31 before training to $31.34 upon completion.
By investing in high-level training, SMI has secured its standing as a premier Tier 1 manufacturer while creating clear pathways for higher wages and sustainable career advancement in Northern Michigan.
The Going PRO Talent Fund catalyzed our business growth by upskilling frontline workers to maximize efficiency, certifying internal auditors to secure elite quality compliance, and expanding our registered apprenticeship program to build a sustainable talent pipeline in Northern Michigan. It also empowered our trainees by providing frontline workers with clear paths for career advancement, equipping our quality team with industry-recognized auditor credentials, and allowing apprentices to master specialized manufacturing trades debt-free through supported classroom instruction and mentorship.

The APEX Accelerator assisted Trans Superior Resources, the Michigan subsidiary of Bitterroot Resources LTD., with their SAM registration, DPA Title III White Paper preparation, govcon training, and RFP response support over the last few years. Trans Superior Resources was able to secure a $5.2 million DPA Title III award from the DoW to help fund the LM Project in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is a nickel-copper exploration joint venture with Below Exploration Inc. Michael Carr from Trans Superior Resources confirmed that the APEX Accelerator team was very helpful in navigating the process, which he described as “daunting”. Going forward, Trans Superior Resources plans to begin a drilling program to locate high-grade nickel and copper sulphide fragments up to 700-metres deep.
After a lot of hard work, we recently received an award from the Department of War under DPA Title III for US$5.22 million of matching funds for the LM Nickel-Copper Exploration Project in the western UP.
This all started with a call I made to Cathy Fairbanks in September 2023. Cathy promptly returned my call and introduced me to you and your Team. With your Team’s help, I ended up submitting a White Paper in late November 2023.
The Department of War (DoW) sent me its first Request For Proposal (RFP) in January 2025. The DoW Award was finalized and announced in mid-September 2026.
You and your APEX Accelerator Team were very helpful, particularly in the early stages, providing advice on registering in SAM.gov and alerting me to the many useful webinars available on Govology.org.
Thanks again for your help. It was a daunting task that I could not have initiated without your Team’s advice.
