New Survey Technician Training Program at NMC

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - A new program at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) will help people learn the skills they need for a career in a high-demand, high-wage field as a survey technician. The Survey Technician Training Program is being offered by NMC in partnership with Northwest Michigan Works!. The five-week program runs from April 6 through May 6, 2023, with classes held Thursday and Friday evenings and all day on Saturdays.

Michigan is at an unprecedented time in its history, needing a technical workforce to help modernize, upgrade, and build new structures, bridges, and roads. Investments are being made to upgrade the infrastructure and companies require trained employees to support this growth. Survey technicians are in demand across all sectors of the construction, inspection, and engineering sectors.

The Survey Technician Training Program is intended to provide the fundamental skills required to become a survey technician and is designed to provide an overview of the technologies and their applications used by the survey and civil engineering industry. The core skill sets participants will receive include Surveying Basics, Interpreting Maps & Contour Lines, Construction Drawings, Construction Site Orientation, and Job Readiness Training.

To be eligible for the program students need to be 18 or older, have a high school diploma or GED, and be interested in a high-wage, rewarding career. Once eligibility has been determined funding will be provided and the course will be offered free of charge. Funding is provided by a Michigan Learning and Education Advancement Program (MiLEAP) grant that Northwest Michigan Works! received from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO).

Upon completion of this program, participants will receive a credential from NMC. The Survey Technician Training Program fulfills the competency required for an academic class credit in the Survey Technology degree at NMC.
