PATH Career Advisor Receives Values in Action Award

Northwest Michigan Works! PATH Career Advisor, Mary Szwed, has received the Networks Northwest Values in Action Award for the second quarter of 2018. Szwed was recognized for being an amazing person with a tremendous dedication to her work and the community as a whole. Mary works in the Manistee Michigan Works! Center and has been with the organization since 2006. The Values in Action Award was presented by Networks Northwest CEO, Matt McCauley, and Northwest Michigan Works! Regional Operations Manager, Kathy Taylor.

As a PATH Advisor, Mary has assisted over 100 PATH participants since September 2016 through weekly Job Club and PATH Orientations, monthly Job Search workshops, and Interviewing workshops. Believing in the power of work, Mary has her PATH participants volunteer with her to learn office skills in order to build their resumes. Recognizing the benefit of having area employers in the American Job Center on a regular basis, Mary assisted and led the Employer of the Day event in the Manistee Center. Mary has assisted in bringing in over 20 employers to meet, interview, and hire job seekers. When many of her participants could not overcome the transportation barrier to travel to the Manistee Michigan Works! Center, Mary “set up shop” in two satellite locations resulting in 204 customer visits at the Benzie Area Christian Neighbors(BACN) location and 168 customer visits in the Benzie County Governmental Center

As an active member of the Human Services Collaborative for the last 10 years, Mary has served on many subcommittees. Mary has also served on the Crystal Lake Property Rights Association as Vice President and as Secretary; and the Betsie Valley Trail Management Council, a Rails to Trails project that connects communities.  At Michigan Works!, Mary has served as a Center Lead, member of the Wellness Committee, is the Facebook administrator, and participated with staff in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk.  Mary is usually the first to arrive at work in the morning and the last to leave.  Her attention to detail, her work ethic, and her dedication to her communities are unwavering.

Networks Northwest spotlights employees on a quarterly basis who exemplify the organization’s Core Values of excellence, integrity, empowerment, innovation, optimism, collaboration, and/or celebration. Networks Northwest also presents an annual Standing Ovation Award to the staff member who represents many, if not all those core values, day in and day out.

The professionals at Networks Northwest help our City Council, Planning Commission, and staff make thoughtful decisions to ensure our community is sustainable and resilient for many years to come.
