Survey Looks at Commuter Perceptions of Driving Across Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – A recently completed survey shows that Traverse City area residents often avoid local areas due to traffic congestion, and a majority of those surveyed believe an additional east-west crossing would have a high impact on travel congestion. The survey was done for the Traverse Transportation Coordinating Initiative (TTCI) and provides information about commuter perceptions of the east-west transportation corridor in the Traverse City area. Survey results will help the TTCI Board and other entities evaluate transportation improvement strategies in the Traverse City Urbanized Area.

32 percent of survey participants indicated they often avoid areas or attractions due to traffic congestion. 52 percent of those surveyed believe an additional east-west crossing would have a high impact on travel congestion. 64 percent of respondents indicated support for a new east-west crossing over the Boardman River somewhere between South Airport Road and Chums Corners.

A random sample of 413 residents 18 and older participated in the telephone survey. The area surveyed included the City of Traverse City, along with Acme, Blair, East Bay, Elmwood, Garfield, and Peninsula townships. Full results of the survey are available at, nwm.org/transportationsurvey.
