YouthBuild Program Receives $4,000 Grant to Build Shed for Fundraising Project

PETOSKEY, MI—A shed built by students at the Petoskey site of YouthBuild Northwest is being sold to raise money for the YouthBuild program. The shed  is the first of two building projects funded by a $4,000 grant from the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation. The eight-foot by fourteen-foot multiple use shed is being sold for $2,500 and can be seen at the YouthBuild office, located at 1601 Standish Avenue in Petoskey.

The custom built shed features full framing and OSB sheeting on the walls, a heavy duty floor,

16-inch on center joists, a six-foot wide roll up door allowing for storage of motorized equipment, and an eight-foot ceiling and layout designed for installation of benches and shelves. The exterior is finished in tan vinyl siding, with charcoal dimensional shingles. A skylight and two large windows provide abundant natural light. The 36-inch steel door has a lock and matching dead bolt for security.

Proceeds from the sale of the shed will be used to assist students with unmet needs such as medical and dental care, glasses, driver license fees, and auto repairs. The purchaser of the shed may be able to claim part of the purchase price as a tax deduction.

YouthBuild is a national construction training and education program for low-income youth. It gives young adults without high school diplomas the opportunity to earn their GED while learning entry-level construction, work readiness, and leadership skills. Hands-on construction training takes place while building affordable housing within the community. Participants who successfully complete the program receive a nationally recognized construction trades certification.

“This shed represents the very essence of YouthBuild,” said Suzy Puroll, site coordinator for Petoskey YouthBuild. “Our students work daily on building their futures through academics, vocational training, and leadership in the community. The person who purchases this shed buys much more than quality construction. They will be helping build the foundation of our students’ futures."

For more information about the shed contact Petoskey YouthBuild Site Coordinator Suzy Puroll at, 231-622-8920.

YouthBuild is a program of Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, operated by Northwest Michigan Works!, with grant funding provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment & Training Administration. YouthBuild Northwest operates programs in Petoskey and Cadillac.
