New Heavy Highway Construction Equipment Training Program at NMC

September 13, 2022

A new program at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) will help people learn the skills they need for a career in the in-demand field of highway construction. The Heavy Highway Construction Training Program is being offered by NMC in partnership with Northwest Michigan Works!, Team Elmer’s, and Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates. The 12-week program starts in January of 2023.

"We are very excited to offer this accelerated training opportunity to meet the growing demand in highway construction,” said Jason Slade, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at NMC. “This training is the result of listening and collaborating with local employers and Northwest Michigan Works! to develop a fully-funded workforce training program. Upon completion, participants will earn an industry recognized credential which can lead to employment in the highway construction field."

To be eligible for the program students need to be 18 or older, have a high school diploma or GED, and be authorized to work in the United States. Once eligibility has been determined funding will be provided and the course will be offered free of charge. Funding is provided by a Michigan Learning and Education Advancement Program (MiLEAP) grant that Northwest Michigan Works! received from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO).

Our Township greatly benefits from Network Northwest's experience, depth of knowledge and understanding. Because they work with so many diverse communities in our ten-county region they understand the local land-use issues and are already working on solutions by the time we realize we need some help.
