Commercial Corridor Visioning Workshops for Future Community Development in Six Northwest Michigan Communities
The Framework For Our Future, a project of the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, is providing assistance to six Grand Vision communities to help identify and visualize potential infill development and streetscape design concepts for their commercial corridors.
“Vibrant commercial corridors are essential for the future economic health of our communities,” said Scott Gest, a regional planner at the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments. “To prosper in today’s changing marketplace, it is increasingly important to provide an enriched experience to attract activity into our commercial areas and counter the price driven lure of online shopping.”
Workshops will be held in the Village of Benzonia, the City of Cadillac, the Village of Fife Lake, the Village of Kalkaska, Leland Township, and the Village of Mancelona. During these workshops local officials, residents, business owners, and other stakeholders will be asked to share their ideas for the future of their downtowns and commercial corridors. Facilitated discussion will focus on selecting potential redevelopment/infill sites as well as collecting input on what development concepts and building forms would be desirable for these sites. The input gathered during these workshops will guide the project design consultant in developing two conceptual sketches for each of the six communities.
These conceptual studies are not intended to design specific projects, but will be used to illustrate land use and development concepts and techniques in the Framework for Our Future. The studies will help assist the community in their public policy initiatives and to potentially encourage and inform the private sector of opportunities.

The Framework for Our Future: Tools and Strategies for Supporting The Grand Vision will act as a regional resource for local governments, nonprofits, and other organizations working to meet local goals. It will include information and tools that can address issues identified by The Grand Vision process, including housing, transportation, land use, energy, arts and culture, workforce and economic development, community health, food and farming systems, and natural resources. The Framework includes a special emphasis on social equity, in order to ensure that populations such as those in poverty, disabled individuals, minorities, youth, and others have a voice in the planning process.
Our Township greatly benefits from Network Northwest's experience, depth of knowledge and understanding. Because they work with so many diverse communities in our ten-county region they understand the local land-use issues and are already working on solutions by the time we realize we need some help.Susan Odom, Chair, Suttons Bay Township Planning Commission
