Northwest Michigan Housing Summit October 20-22 Live Webinar Series And “Missing Middle” Keynote
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 1, 2020
TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The 2020 Northwest Michigan Housing Summit is going virtual on October 20, 21, and 22. Now in its sixth year, this premier event brings communities, businesses, developers, housing agencies, funders, and more together to learn from national, state, and regional experts about emerging housing solutions. This year Housing North and Networks Northwest are offering more sessions and opportunities to talk with peers and experts, including nationally-recognized keynote speakers Michael Brown of Burlington Associates in Community Development and Daniel Parolek, architect and author of Missing Middle Housing.
Author, architect, and urban designer, Parolek inspired a new movement for housing choice in 2010 when he coined the term “Missing Middle Housing,” a term that describes the walkable, desirable, yet attainable housing that many people across the country are struggling to find—such as duplexes, fourplexes, and bungalow courts. As we face a tremendous mismatch between the available housing stock and the housing options that people want and need, communities are looking for ways to offer a range of housing types across the spectrum of affordability, and Missing Middle Housing is a time-proven way to create those options. Parolek will introduce the concept of Missing Middle Housing, why it’s needed, and how communities can make changes needed to accommodate it at his October 21 Summit keynote.
The Housing Summit will also feature live sessions covering housing demand & the economy post-COVID, community land trusts, tools for year-round and affordable housing, collaborative funding models, fair housing and access to opportunity, and Northwest Michigan housing projects and success stories. Registration for the Summit includes three full days of sessions, including opportunities for discussion with speakers, and access to the recorded sessions following the event.
