Northwest Michigan Works! and MiLEAP Help Job Seeker Get CDL

September 8, 2022

After working for about ten years in healthcare, Lisa Peterson decided she wanted to get back into the trucking industry, a field she’d been in prior to working in healthcare. Peterson got a job driving a street sweeper but wanted to get her Class A Commercial Driver’s License so she could get a job with better pay and no seasonal lay-off.

She went to a job fair at a local truck driving school and the staff there suggested she contact Northwest Michigan Works! to see if they could help her with funding for truck driver training. The staff at Michigan Works! connected Peterson with the Michigan Learning and Education Advancement Program (MiLEAP) which provided $3,000 to cover part of the cost of her training.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” said Peterson. “They’re willing to help you. Get the help. It was worth it.”

After completing her training, Peterson was hired by Central Transport in Traverse City where she’s working as a truck driver. She says people who need help paying for training for a new job should contact Michigan Works! to find out what programs might be available.

“I would like to thank the State of Michigan for helping me because without their help I don’t know where I would be,” said Peterson. “It’s given me strength and confidence. I’m very appreciative for all the help.”

Watch the video below to hear what Peterson has to say about the help she received from Northwest Michigan Works! and MiLEAP.
