JMG Students Learn About Starting a Small Business

Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) students in the Char-Em ISD’s welding program at East Jordan High School had the chance to learn how to start a small business. Northwest Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Business Consultant, Kathleen Bagley, visited the welding class to talk with the students about the steps to starting up a small business and a variety of information related to the process.

Northwest Michigan Works! and the Char-Em ISD Career and Technical Education Program are partnering to provide the JMG program to students in Char-Em’s welding program at East Jordan and Pellston. A JMG Specialist provides mentoring, job readiness and leadership development skills, connections to work experience, and brings in guest speakers like Bagley to talk with the students.

The statewide JMG program helps Michigan's young adults graduate and make successful transitions to postsecondary education or meaningful employment. Along with the program at the Char-Em ISD, Northwest Michigan Works! also coordinates JMG programs at the Traverse Bay Area ISD Career-Tech Center and the Wexford-Missaukee Career Tech Center.

Our Township greatly benefits from Network Northwest's experience, depth of knowledge and understanding. Because they work with so many diverse communities in our ten-county region they understand the local land-use issues and are already working on solutions by the time we realize we need some help.
